In March 2025, the market for raw materials used in the production of synthetic filaments was experiencing a period of significant volatility. In particular, PBT recorded substantial price fluctuations, while the PET market showed a different trend, characterised by weak demand and pressure on prices.
Raw material market situation – March 2025
PET (polyethylene terephthalate) and PBT (polybutylene terephthalate) are two important raw materials used in the production of synthetic filaments for the brush and paintbrush industry.
In March 2025, the international market for these polymers was going through a particularly unstable period, influenced by trends in chemical raw materials, demand, production capacity and the international economic situation.
The strong movement in PBT
During March, the Chinese PBT market recorded particularly rapid movements.
Market data available at the time showed a sharp increase in prices during the first part of the month, with values rising within a few days from approximately 8,150 RMB per tonne to more than 10,000 RMB per tonne in some market assessments.
Such a rapid change made it difficult for manufacturers and processors to provide medium-term quotations and contributed to uncertainty throughout the supply chain.
A different situation for PET
PET, on the other hand, showed a different situation. In March 2025, the Asian market continued to be affected by relatively weak demand and significant available production capacity.
This illustrates how PET and PBT, although both belonging to the polyester family and both used in filament production, can follow different market dynamics.
Impact on synthetic filaments
Changes in raw material costs can affect the production costs of synthetic filaments used in brush and paintbrush manufacturing.
The price of the finished filament, however, does not depend solely on the cost of the polymer. Other factors also play a role, including the type of material, the extrusion process, subsequent processing, required technical characteristics, transport costs and exchange rates.
A market to monitor
The situation observed in March 2025 is an example of how quickly raw material markets can change.
For this reason, A.S.&C. continuously monitors the markets for materials used in the production of synthetic filaments, with the aim of keeping its customers informed about changes that may affect prices and supply lead times.
