Synthetic filaments for professional paintbrushes
Synthetic filaments are now an essential component in the manufacture of professional paintbrushes and can provide different characteristics depending on the application, fibre geometry and required performance.
A.S.&C. supplies selected synthetic brush filaments for professional paintbrush manufacturing, with particular focus on PET, PBT and Nylon 6.12. The different solutions available make it possible to evaluate diameter, cross-section, profile, elasticity, stiffness and tip characteristics according to the product to be manufactured.
The continuous evolution of materials and manufacturing technologies also makes it possible to produce filaments with increasingly specific characteristics, developed to meet the requirements of different sectors of professional paintbrush manufacturing.
Selected polymers for different requirements
PET
Polyethylene terephthalate is used in the manufacture of paintbrush filaments thanks to the possibility of obtaining different combinations of stiffness, elasticity and fibre geometry.
PBT
Polybutylene terephthalate can be used to produce filaments with different characteristics of elasticity, resilience and tip behaviour and is widely used in the manufacture of professional paintbrushes.
Nylon 6.12
Nylon 6.12 is used for applications requiring specific characteristics of elasticity, flexibility, resistance and filament behaviour during use.
Different profiles for different performance requirements
In addition to the choice of polymer, paintbrush performance is significantly influenced by filament geometry. Diameter, profile, cross-section and end treatment can modify stiffness, elasticity, loading capacity and the way the product is released.
The choice should therefore take into account not only the material itself, but the complete set of filament characteristics and the result the manufacturer wants to achieve in the finished product.
Cylindrical filaments
Constant-diameter filaments available in different diameters, colours, cross-sections and technical characteristics.
Mechanically tapered filaments
Mechanical processing of the filament end modifies the behaviour of the tip and makes it possible to obtain specific characteristics in the paintbrush.
Chemically tapered filaments
Chemical treatment produces very fine ends, particularly suitable for paintbrushes requiring precision, softness and consistent performance.
Diameters, cross-sections and combinations
Fibre geometry can be selected to modify flexibility, stiffness and filament behaviour during use.
Filaments with different characteristics can be combined to achieve a specific balance of elasticity, stiffness, loading capacity and product release.
Fine synthetic filaments for professional applications
A particularly specialised category consists of fine synthetic filaments designed for the manufacture of artist brushes, cosmetic brushes and shaving brushes.
These synthetic fibres have very small diameters and are developed to provide the fineness, softness, elasticity and precision required for these applications. Some of the finest available diameters include 0.07 mm, 0.10 mm and 0.15 mm.
Although completely synthetic, their fineness and achievable characteristics allow these filaments to be used in many of the same applications traditionally served by fine natural hairs.
Depending on the required performance, they can therefore be used to complement or replace certain natural fibres, including specific synthetic solutions for shaving brushes as an alternative to badger hair.
Through its collaboration with highly specialised manufacturers of fine synthetic filaments, A.S.&C. can offer different solutions by evaluating diameter, fibre geometry, tip characteristics, softness, elasticity and resilience according to the type of brush and the required performance.
Filaments for different types of brushes
Paintbrushes
Cylindrical and tapered filaments, as well as combinations of different filaments, can be selected to achieve different levels of stiffness, elasticity, loading capacity and paint release.
Artist Brushes
Fine synthetic filaments for brushes requiring precision, control, elasticity, high-quality tips and consistent performance.
Cosmetic Brushes
Fine, soft synthetic fibres selected according to the type of brush, the cosmetic product to be applied and the characteristics required for contact with the skin.
Shaving Brushes
Specific fine synthetic filaments can be used as an alternative to natural hair, including badger hair, with different characteristics of softness, elasticity and behaviour during use.
