Nails for paintbrush manufacturing
Nails used in professional paintbrush manufacturing are a small but essential component for achieving reliable and consistent fastening of the ferrule to the handle.
A.S.&C. supplies nails specifically designed for the paintbrush industry, available in different diameters, lengths, materials, finishes and shank configurations to meet the requirements of different manufacturing systems.
The correct choice of nail depends on the handle material, paintbrush dimensions, fastening system and the characteristics of the machinery used in production.
Smooth, knurled and spiral nails

Smooth nails
The traditional solution for many applications in paintbrush manufacturing, particularly for fastening the ferrule to wooden handles.
Dimensional consistency is important to ensure reliable nail feeding, including in automated manufacturing processes.

Knurled nails
The textured surface of the shank improves the nail's grip in the material and contributes to a secure fastening.
They are available in different sizes and can also be used in the manufacture of paintbrushes with plastic handles.

Spiral nails
The special spiral configuration of the shank increases the contact surface with the material into which the nail is driven.
They can be used in applications requiring particularly secure fastening.
Sizes for different manufacturing requirements
Nail dimensions are normally identified by a numbering system defining the shank diameter and the length under the head.
In the French sizing system used in the industry, approximately, size 7 corresponds to a diameter of about 1.2 mm, size 8 to about 1.3 mm, size 9 to about 1.4 mm and size 10 to about 1.5 mm.
The second value indicates the length under the head. A nail specified, for example, as 7 × 7.5 therefore has a diameter corresponding to size 7 and an under-head length of approximately 7.5 mm.
Available sizes according to requirements: 7×6.5 · 7×7.5 · 9×8 · 10×7 · 10×8 · 10×9.
Available in the main sizes No. 7 · No. 8 · No. 10, according to the application and manufacturing system.
Heads, materials and finishes
Head diameter
Different head diameters are available, including approximately 2.8 mm and 3 mm, to be selected according to the fastening requirements.
Materials
Depending on the application, different materials and configurations may be available, including stainless steel.
Finishes
Depending on the type, different surface finishes may be available, including nickel-plated, copper-plated, natural polished and chrome-plated.
Consistency and reliability in the manufacturing process
In automated paintbrush manufacturing, dimensional consistency of the nail is particularly important. Diameter, length, head and shank consistency must be suitable for the feeding system and the machinery being used.
Consistent quality helps reduce problems in automatic feeding systems and maintain a reliable ferrule fastening process.
Different shank configurations are available, including smooth, knurled and spiral versions, as well as solutions with specific treatments or technical characteristics according to the application.
Quantities and cost optimisation
The unit cost of nails is strongly influenced by production and purchasing quantities. Larger volumes normally make it possible to optimise the product cost significantly.
For this reason, we evaluate the required size, type, finish and quantity together with the customer, with the aim of identifying a solution that is both technically suitable and commercially sustainable.
Solutions for different fastening systems
Wooden Handles
Different sizes of smooth nails can be selected according to the dimensions of the paintbrush, ferrule and handle characteristics.
Plastic Handles
Knurled nails can provide increased grip in applications requiring the ferrule to be fastened to plastic handles.
Automated Production
Dimensional consistency and consistent quality contribute to the correct operation of automatic feeding and nailing systems.
Specific Requirements
Dimensions, shank configurations and finishes can be evaluated according to the characteristics of the paintbrush and the customer's manufacturing process.
